We're looking forward to some big changes in the park this year! We will be temporarily closing for planned enhancements this year thanks to $2.95 million in federal relief funding from Gov. Whitmer's Building Michigan Together Plan. Below you'll see some Q&A. Save this post for future reference. When will the park be temporarily closing? At the end of April portions of the Island Lake State Recreation Area will close to the public. Different portions will be closed at different times throughout the construction, which is estimated to be complete by November 2024. What enhancements are going to be done at the park? • Kent Lake day-use area roadway • Kent Lake and Spring Mill Pond parking lots • Sidewalks • Restroom upgrades • Park entrance improvements What parts of the park will remain open during construction? • Kent Lake Beach and parking for Trout Lake until August 8th. • Spring Mill Pond until September 3rd. • The west end of the park until September 16th. • Biking and hiking trails will remain open for use and enjoyment during construction. What parts of the park will be closed? • The Kent Lake day-use area roadway east of Kent Lake Beach and the Bluebird and Hickory Shelters will close at the end of April for the season. • Kent Lake Beach and Dam, parking for Trout Lake and parking for the Hickory Ridge Hiking Trail will close August 8th through October 2024. • Spring Mill Pond will close September 3rd for the season. • The park vehicle entrance will close September 16th through October 2024. How can I access the park during construction? • To access Trout Lake and the Hickory Ridge Hiking trail after August 8th, park in designated parking lots on the west side of the park and bike or walk the nonmotorized paved path. • To access the Huron River after August 8th, park at the Huron River Fishing Boat Access Site, Riverbend Shelter, or Placeway Boat Access Site. • Once construction at the entrance of the park begins September 16th, access the park via the nonmotorized entrance by foot or bicycle from the Green Oak Township connector trail near JC Penney at the Green Oak Village Place Mall.
